Q. What exactly does RES SUCCESS do?

A. RES SUCCESS provides a normalized “enriched” environment for developmentally disabled adults. Many of these individuals have moderate to severe behavioral challenges, and are usually placed in state-operated hospitals. RES SUCCESS staff operates under the premise that “behind every behavior is a legitimate request.” Over time, students are taught to replace disruptive behaviors with safer, more appropriate behaviors in order to get their needs met.

At RES SUCCESS they learn skills to keep themselves safe in a manner that promotes their self-esteem and self-worth. We ask the key question: “How can we help you to be safe?” It’s a proven approach that empowers the students to want to succeed.

Q. Who uses RES SUCCESS services?

A. All RES SUCCESS students are developmentally disabled. A developmental disability is a cognitive impairment such as: autism and/or mental retardation. The disability originates before the age of 18, is expected to continue indefinitely, and constitutes a substantial handicap to the individual.

Many of our students also have dual diagnoses with one or more of the following: attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, and more. With such dual diagnoses, there are often significant behavioral challenges that need to be addressed and overcome. Traditionally, these are the students who have not succeeded in other treatment programs, who are often turned over to state-run facilities. However, time and experience has proven that there is a better, more cost-effective approach to serving these individuals.

Q. What programs are offered by RES SUCCESS?

A. RES SUCCESS students have varying levels of abilities, so each student receives an individual service plan and works with staff members on behavior replacement training. Our main focus is to help individuals replace disruptive behaviors with life skills, which makes measurable, meaningful differences in the quality of their lives and can lead to better integration into the community. We provide them with a beautiful environment in which to learn and grow to help build their self -esteem and self-worth. We also provide them with a safe, supportive environment where their needs can be met, reducing the tendency to display inappropriate behaviors.

Day treatment services are held Monday through Friday. Each adult student receives a wide variety of educational opportunities. We have instructors who work with our students in reading, writing, math, social studies, and tactile activities such as puzzles, motor skill exercises, and using manipulatives. To further the emotional well-being of our clients, we also provide music, dance and art therapy. RES SUCCESS offers its students individual and group therapy to address personal and family dynamics. To promote community interaction, we also have field trips that include bowling, golf, bocce ball, and rich cultural experiences, such as visits to museums and art galleries. The SUCCESS portion of our name affirms what our students have achieved – it is through their successes that we continue to grow as an organization.

Q. How do clients get placed with RES SUCCESS?

A. As part of the 1969 Lanterman Act, 21 state-operated Regional Centers were created in the State of California to guarantee services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Each Regional Center provides coordinated care and case management, and tries to find alternatives to full-time hospitalization whenever possible.

Typically, RES SUCCESS clients are referred by case managers at the Regional Center of the East Bay. It is through this state agency that RES SUCCESS receives funding from the State of California. If you'd like to know more about placement, please contact us.
